Books are the greatest joys of life! Reading not only enhances your imagination and vocabulary, but also makes you more appreciative towards life. Some books leave a deep imprint on our psyche and when we put them down after a good read, they fill us with emotions and make us appreciative of life as a whole. Here is a list of five such books, that will definitely make you appreciate the small joys of life.


5. ‘A Dog’s Purpose’- W. Bruce Cameron


If you are like me and dogs are the animals you adore the most, then this is the apt book for you! If you bawled your eyes out after watching ‘Hachiko’ and ‘Marley and Me’, then you would simply LOVE this masterpiece! W. Bruce Cameron weaves a beautiful story from a dog’s point of view and lets you dive into the intricacies of dog-human, human-dog relationships. The USP of this book is the story of the dog told in a series of births and deaths and the ’purpose’ that the protagonist pooch wishes to find behind multiple rebirths. Read this story for an extremely heartwarming portrayal of a dog and his quest for answers.

4. ‘The Book Thief’- Marcus Zusak



If you are a rule breaker and are fond of Nazi Germany stories, then this is the book for you! The charming portrayal of our ‘book thief’, Liesel Meminger, and her eccentric foster family, narrated by Death itself; will not let you put down the book until you reach the very last page! This book is pretty philosophical and gives a beautiful portrayal of both creation and death in the Nazi era. It delves deep into a child’s psyche and describes vividly what Liesel goes through in the Nazi regime. Read this book for its World War II theme, the Nazi era and of course, the joy of reading that our book thief goes through.


3. ‘Number The Stars’- Lois Lowry



Another Nazi Germany themed story on the list, ‘Number the Stars’ opens our hearts and makes us appreciate the sacred bond of friendship. Historical, short and part autobiographical in nature, this book has many parallel themes. The Danish patriotism, friendship between the main protagonist, Annemarie Johansen and her Jewish friend, Ellen Rosen, brutality of Nazi Germany, despair during the World War II are some of the major themes intricately woven in this short novel. Read this novel for the amazing climax inspired from a real World War II incident that actually saved more than 2,000 Danish Jews!


2. ‘The Catcher In the Rye’- J.D. Sallinger


Nobody told us that growing up would be difficult. This cult classic and once a very controversial novel, deals with the hassle of growing up. Narrated by a delusional teenager, Holden Caulfield, it explores the psyche of all young adults through Holden’s point of view. A 16-year old American boy relates in his own words the experiences he goes through at school and after, and reveals with unusual candour the workings of his own mind. Read this novel for the unanswerable questions that always baffled us in our adolescence and the little joys one tends to ignore.

Number one on our list, this literary masterpiece by Nobel awardee, V.S. Naipaul is a piece of art that deals with the most complicated emotions of life- the sense of ‘identity’. Narrated by the protagonist Willie Chandran, the son of an Indian freedom fighter, it tells his story with a kind, heartfelt touch to it and dives in the world of emotions in search of Identity. Willie’ dilemma and quest to discover both happiness and love is something that melts the heart. Read this novel for its picturesque description of the Indian, African and Portuguese terrain, the intricacies of the ‘British Raj’ and the quest for Identity that makes you appreciate your life for whatever it has given you.
